The Complete Gorilla Trekking Guide

Everything you need to know before your mountain gorilla trek — from permits and fitness levels to what to pack and how to behave in the presence of gorillas.

What is Gorilla Trekking?

Gorilla trekking is a guided hike through dense forest to find and spend one hour with a habituated family of wild mountain gorillas. Unlike zoo encounters, this is a completely wild experience — the gorillas live freely in their natural habitat and have simply been accustomed to the presence of humans through a careful multi-year habituation process.

Only 1,063 mountain gorillas exist on Earth, found exclusively in the Virunga Massif (spanning Rwanda, Uganda and DRC) and Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Uganda. A gorilla trek is therefore one of the rarest wildlife experiences available anywhere in the world.

Rwanda vs Uganda — Which is Better?

Rwanda (Volcanoes National Park) offers more predictable treks — families tend to be found faster (1–4 hours), the park infrastructure is excellent, and the scenery of the volcano chain is dramatic. Permits cost $1,500 USD. Kigali airport to park takes about 2 hours.

Uganda (Bwindi Impenetrable Forest) offers a rawer, more adventurous experience. Treks tend to be longer and through denser vegetation. Uganda has more habituated groups (over 20 families). Permits cost $700 USD — significantly more affordable. Many travellers say Bwindi feels more authentic.

We recommend Rwanda for first-timers or those with limited time, and Uganda for those seeking a longer adventure or combining with other parks like Queen Elizabeth or Murchison Falls.

Physical Requirements & Fitness

Gorilla trekking is a moderate-to-strenuous hike. You should be able to walk for 2–8 hours over uneven, sometimes steep terrain at altitude (1,500–3,000m). There is no specific fitness requirement — people of all ages (minimum 15 years old) complete gorilla treks. However:

  • Carry plenty of water and snacks — treks can last all day
  • Porter services are available and strongly recommended for steep terrain
  • Altitude can affect energy levels — arrive a day early to acclimatise
  • Those with serious medical conditions should consult a doctor first
  • Walking sticks / trekking poles are provided at the park

Gorilla Permits — Everything You Need to Know

  • Rwanda: $1,500 USD per person per trek (includes one-hour visit)
  • Uganda: $700 USD per person per trek
  • Permits are limited — only 8 people per gorilla family per day
  • Book 6–12 months in advance for peak season (June–September, December–February)
  • Twija Africa Safaris secures your permit directly — no third-party fees
  • Permits are non-refundable once booked, but can sometimes be rescheduled
  • Children under 15 years are not permitted to trek

Best Time to Go Gorilla Trekking

Gorilla trekking is possible year-round, but the following seasons are optimal:

  • June to September — Dry season, trails are firm, vegetation lower, excellent visibility. Most popular and most expensive period. Book well in advance.
  • December to February — Short dry season. Comfortable temperatures, fewer tourists than June–September.
  • March to May / October–November — Wet season. Forest is lush and dramatically beautiful. Fewer tourists, permits more available. Trails can be slippery.

Rules in the Presence of Gorillas

  • Maintain a minimum 7-metre distance from gorillas at all times
  • Do not make direct sustained eye contact with dominant silverbacks
  • If a gorilla charges — crouch down, look away and do not run
  • No flash photography — turn off camera sounds and use silent mode
  • Do not eat or drink within 200m of the gorillas
  • Whisper only — avoid loud voices or sudden movements
  • If you feel unwell (flu, cold, infections), do not trek — gorillas share 98.3% of human DNA and are highly susceptible to our diseases
  • The one-hour time limit is strictly enforced — there are no exceptions

What to Pack for Your Gorilla Trek

Long-sleeved shirt (dark colour)
Long trousers / hiking pants
Waterproof hiking boots
Rain jacket / poncho
Garden gloves (for thorny vines)
Insect repellent (DEET)
Sunscreen
2L water + snacks
Camera (no flash)
Small daypack
Trekking poles (optional)
First aid basics

Gorilla Habituation Experience

In addition to standard gorilla trekking (1 hour), Uganda offers a Gorilla Habituation Experience — a 4-hour visit with a gorilla family that is still in the process of becoming accustomed to humans. This costs $1,500 USD and offers an extraordinary, extended encounter. Rwanda offers a similar golden monkey habituation experience. Ask us to include either in your itinerary.

⚡ Quick Tips

  • Wear long sleeves — forest insects bite
  • Hire a porter — they're invaluable on steep slopes
  • Start early — treks begin at 7–8am
  • Charge all camera batteries the night before
  • Book permits 6–12 months ahead
  • Get travel insurance that covers treks
  • Yellow fever vaccination required for Rwanda & Uganda
  • Bring cash — no ATMs near the parks

⚠️ Health & Safety

  • Malaria prophylaxis recommended
  • Do not trek if you have flu or infection
  • Minimum age 15 years
  • Max altitude: 3,000m — acclimatise first
  • Travel insurance is mandatory

Got Questions?

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before booking your Twija Africa Safari — from permits and pricing to health, packing and what to expect.

How far in advance should I book a gorilla trekking permit?
+
We strongly recommend booking 6 to 12 months in advance for peak season (June–September and December–February). Gorilla permits are extremely limited — only 8 people per gorilla family per day — and they sell out quickly. We can sometimes secure last-minute permits in the low season, but we never guarantee this. Contact us as soon as your travel dates are confirmed.
How much does a gorilla permit cost in Rwanda and Uganda?
+
Rwanda gorilla permits cost $1,500 USD per person per trek. Uganda gorilla permits cost $700 USD per person per trek. Both include a one-hour visit with a gorilla family. Twija Africa Safaris secures your permit directly from Rwanda Development Board and Uganda Wildlife Authority at the official rates — we do not add markups to permit costs.
What is your cancellation and refund policy?
+
Gorilla permits are non-refundable once purchased from RDB or UWA. However, permits can sometimes be rescheduled with adequate notice. Our tour booking cancellation policy: cancellations 60+ days before departure: 80% refund. 30–60 days: 50% refund. Under 30 days: non-refundable. We always recommend comprehensive travel insurance. Contact us to discuss your specific situation.
Can I book a custom/tailor-made itinerary?
+
Absolutely — custom itineraries are our specialty. We'll design a completely personalised safari based on your travel dates, group size, budget, interests, and fitness level. Simply use our contact form or WhatsApp us and we'll have a bespoke proposal to you within 24 hours.
How long does a gorilla trek take?
+
The hiking time varies greatly depending on where the gorilla family is that day — it can be as short as 30 minutes or as long as 8 hours. Most treks average 2–5 hours of hiking. Once you find the gorilla family, you spend exactly one hour with them regardless of trek length. Treks start between 7am and 8am at the park headquarters.
Is gorilla trekking physically demanding?
+
It is a moderate hike through forest terrain at altitude (1,500–3,000m). The difficulty depends on which family you're assigned — some are found easily, others require steep, slippery climbs. Most healthy adults of all ages complete the trek successfully. We recommend hiring a porter ($15–20) who will also help physically support you on steep sections. If you have mobility concerns, please tell us — we can discuss adapted options.
Is it guaranteed I will see gorillas?
+
Yes — virtually guaranteed. Trackers go into the forest at first light to locate the gorilla family before trekkers set out. In the very rare case (less than 1%) that a family cannot be found, permits are rescheduled. Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park has an extremely high sighting rate due to the smaller park size and dense family coverage.
What is the difference between Rwanda and Uganda for gorilla trekking?
+
Rwanda offers a more polished, accessible experience with shorter average trek times and stunning volcano scenery — permits cost $1,500. Uganda's Bwindi Impenetrable Forest offers a rawer, more adventurous jungle experience with permits at $700. Uganda has more habituated gorilla families and is ideal if you want to combine the trek with other parks like Queen Elizabeth or Murchison Falls. Many of our guests do both on a combined Rwanda–Uganda tour.
What vaccinations do I need for Rwanda and Uganda?
+
Yellow fever vaccination is mandatory for both Rwanda and Uganda — you must carry your yellow fever certificate. We also recommend vaccinations for Hepatitis A, Typhoid and routine vaccinations (MMR, Tetanus). Malaria prophylaxis medication is strongly recommended for both countries. Consult your travel health doctor at least 4–6 weeks before departure.
What happens if I'm sick on the day of my gorilla trek?
+
If you have cold, flu, cough or any respiratory symptoms on the day of your trek, you will NOT be permitted to enter the forest. This rule is strictly enforced to protect the gorillas, who share 98.3% of human DNA and have no immunity to our diseases. Please notify us immediately — we will try our best to reschedule your permit, though this is not always possible. This is one more reason comprehensive travel insurance is essential.
What currency is used and can I use cards?
+
Rwanda uses Rwandan Franc (RWF) and Uganda uses Ugandan Shilling (UGX). US Dollars are widely accepted for major purchases. Kigali and Kampala/Entebbe have plenty of ATMs and card machines, but near the national parks there are very limited facilities. We strongly recommend carrying sufficient USD cash before leaving the city. Your Twija package costs are payable by bank transfer, card or mobile money.
Do I need a visa for Rwanda and/or Uganda?
+
Rwanda offers visa-on-arrival for citizens of most countries, and many nationalities can also apply online in advance at migration.gov.rw. The East Africa Tourist Visa ($100 USD) covers Rwanda, Uganda, and Kenya and is excellent value if you're combining countries. Uganda also offers e-visa applications at visas.immigration.go.ug. We'll advise you on the best option for your nationality.
What is the best time of year to visit Rwanda and Uganda?
+
The two dry seasons are ideal: June to September (long dry season — most popular, book well ahead) and December to February (short dry season). These periods offer firm trails, lower vegetation, and more comfortable trekking. The wet seasons (March–May and October–November) bring lush, dramatic scenery, fewer crowds, and sometimes more available permits — experienced trekkers often prefer these months.
Is Twija Africa Safaris a licensed operator?
+
Yes. Twija Africa Safaris is a fully licensed tourism operator registered with the Rwanda Development Board and certified by Uganda Wildlife Authority. We are also eco-tourism certified in Rwanda and hold a TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence. We operate entirely within the law and to the highest ethical standards of sustainable wildlife tourism.
